Eric begged the Adelaid Loan Company employees through tears and snot, pleading for mercy for his family. Behind him, his wife clutched their daughter, watching in despair as the employees loaded their valuables—including their magical motorcycle bicycle—onto a steam-powered truck before slapping a foreclosure notice on their only home.
"Mr. Eric, don’t make this harder for us. We’re just following orders—we can’t help you. Take my advice: head to the relief station now, and you might still get a loaf of bread."
Jim, one of the Adelaid employees, looked pained but firmly pried Eric’s fingers from his sleeve. He pitied Eric’s family, but he couldn’t afford to lose his job—even if it barely paid a salary anymore.
