Chapter 104: Death Question, Text Trap

No lying allowed!

The Ghostly Nurse froze mid-sentence. As a special NPC, she keenly sensed that lying would lead to disaster. Suddenly, she realized something and stared at Ji Yan in shock. "You just used the [Lies Parchment]... on me?!"

Ji Yan smiled warmly. "If I hadn’t used the parchment, how could I have lured you and the Snake Doctor out? You set a trap for me, and I returned the favor. Now’s not the time to change the subject—you still haven’t answered my question!"

The Ghostly Nurse didn’t know what would happen if she lied, but she knew her role as a pawn planted beside Ji Yan was already compromised. So, she chose to tell the truth.

"Yes."

Just two simple words. She knew the shorter the answer, the safer.

Yet, the next moment, she still fell into the trap of the Privilege.

She had stepped on a landmine!

"What’s going on? I didn’t lie, so why...?"

In her panic, she saw Ji Yan’s smile grow even brighter.

"Actually, whether you lie or tell the truth, the outcome is the same—as long as you answer."

From the very beginning, Ji Yan had prepared this "death interrogation" specifically for the Ghostly Nurse.

"Are you a pawn planted by the Dragon Player?"

If she answered "no," it would be judged as a lie, triggering the [Lies Parchment] Privilege.

If she answered "yes," it would be judged as truth, triggering the [Truth Parchment] Privilege.

Using both parchments together created an inescapable death question.

Flawless!

However, the conditions for using the [Parchments] were quite strict.

The primary requirement was to make an accurate judgment about an unknown matter to activate them. Additionally, the target had to either lie or tell the truth—otherwise, the parchment would crack. Each parchment could only endure three cracks before being permanently destroyed.

Thus, Ji Yan only used the parchments when he was absolutely certain of his judgment.

The secondary condition was that even if written in blood, the Privilege had to remain within reasonable limits—otherwise, the blood writing would vanish automatically.

For example, now that the Ghostly Nurse had stepped into the trap, the [Truth Parchment] was successfully triggered, but the Privilege granted to Ji Yan was merely the right to ask her three questions.

It did not grant him the Privilege to "turn" her against her master.

Ding! You have used the special Supernatural Artifact [Truth Parchment]. Privilege triggered— Ghostly Nurse 9527 has been released from the control of the [Dragon] Player. You may now ask this Supernatural Entity three questions, and Nurse 9527 must answer truthfully under compulsion!

As the notification ended, the Ghostly Nurse’s pupils contracted slightly.

As if nothing had happened, she asked Ji Yan with feigned confusion, "Teacher, what would you like to ask?"

Ji Yan knew that only now could he fully trust her.

So he posed his first question: "What was the Dragon Doctor’s purpose in sending you to my side?"

The Ghostly Nurse’s expression stiffened. After a brief pause, she answered woodenly, "Surveillance."

Ji Yan smacked his forehead, cursing himself for asking such a useless, stupid question.

Then he threw out his second question: "What were his exact instructions?"

"There were no instructions. Only surveillance."

"..."

Damn it.

Two questions gone just like that!

Ji Yan rubbed his temples. He had a rough idea that the Ghostly Nurse, as a mere "pawn," probably knew next to nothing useful, but he still couldn’t resist trying.

Gu Meng, who had been spectating the whole time, chuckled and teased, "Why don’t you ask this nurse here what she had for lunch?"

Ignoring her, Ji Yan pondered for a moment before posing his final question: "Did the Dragon Doctor mention anything about me?"

Originally, he had wanted to ask, "What does the Dragon Doctor want with the Sheepskin Scroll?" But realizing it would likely be futile, he opted for a simpler question to fish for any scrap of information.

Surprisingly, the Ghostly Nurse had an answer: "He did. He said the [Undead Hospital] needs an update and can’t do without the [Zodiac Goat]."

"The Dragon Doctor’s puzzle is almost complete—only the piece in the Goat Doctor’s hands is missing!"

An update? A puzzle?

Ji Yan raised an eyebrow. Those two words carried some heavy implications.

Once the three questions were answered, the privilege of the [Truth Parchment] expired. Ji Yan expected the Ghostly Nurse to revert to a regular NPC nurse, free from his and the Dragon Player’s control.

But the next second, the Ghostly Nurse melted into a pool of bloody sludge, her clothes rapidly evaporating on the floor…

The Sheepskin Scroll had outright "deleted" this NPC.

Well, that was even more ruthless than he’d expected.

In the ward, the radiation from the Supernatural Pregnant Woman dissipated. Ji Yan’s festering skin healed, and his lost hair visibly regrew.

"Goat Doctor, that pregnant woman really did a number on you," Gu Meng remarked, resting her chin on her hand with a smirk. "Want me to get revenge for you?"

Though this patient always spoke to Ji Yan with a mocking tone, she was still one he had successfully "guided," and there was some goodwill between them.

The moment she finished speaking, the Supernatural Pregnant Woman on the surgery bed trembled in fear.

"No, she can’t die!" Ji Yan thought to himself. This mission involving the Supernatural Pregnant Woman hid an [Epic]-grade reward. If she died, all his efforts would be wasted.

He hurried over to the surgery bed and interacted with her briefly.

Soon, the mission completion panel popped up.

But when Ji Yan saw the reward, he was stunned.

"Ding! Congratulations, player. You have obtained a [Rare]-quality Supernatural Artifact—Epic Bandage."

[Rare] quality?!

What the hell happened to [Epic]?!

Ji Yan opened the artifact details, checking repeatedly.

Finally, with a headache, he spotted the trick—it was a text trap.

The "Epic" in the mission didn’t refer to the quality but to the artifact’s name!

Damn it, this was outright deception!

Since when did the Supernatural Game start pulling shady tricks like this?

He scrutinized the mission details and quickly realized this wasn’t the only text trap.

The mission description had stated it "may contain Main Plot information"—that single word "may" meant there was none at all. Pure bait for players!

As for why this so-called "Free Mission" didn’t allow Ji Yan to quit—it was because the mission specified that players could only exit freely during the "Nighttime Task" phase.

Since it was now past 6 a.m., the daytime segment had begun, forcing him to complete the mission!

"Damn, this entire mission is one big scam!"

Even Ji Yan couldn’t hold back his frustration.

This is the first time I've encountered such a damn trap of a mission.

Suddenly, it occurred to him that this mission might be a scheme set up by that Dragon Player to lure him in. Could it be...?

Ji Yan reopened the mission panel and tapped on the two lines of text describing the mission.

Just as he expected, his [Talent] was triggered!

"Congratulations, player. You have obtained hidden information from player 'Dragon Doctor'—"

"In order to design this trap to kill you, he deliberately used an S-level talent called [Cherry-Picking]. This talent allows him to modify the content of a mission with a 'Text Trap,' misleading players into misinterpreting it and thus falling into danger."

"This tried-and-true method has made him a master of wordplay."

Ji Yan shook his head.

As expected, not all the game's hints in this Instance can be fully trusted.

Planting the Ghostly Nurse by his side was clearly another use of "wordplay," making players mistakenly believe this NPC assistant was completely trustworthy.

If not for the warning from [Omniscient Understanding], he probably would have trusted the Ghostly Nurse unconditionally and fallen right into the Dragon Player's trap...

Who would have thought that even the game's content could hide lethal dangers?
